PIKEVILLE, KY, October 1 — The Pikeville Community Foundation (PCF) is now accepting applications for its 2027 Food Security grant program available to community-based nonprofit organizations administering food programs in Pike County. Organizations must provide food distribution to people of all ages including children. Grants will range from $2,500 to $8,000. The application is available online at http://bit.ly/ekygrantapp. The deadline for grant submission is December 1, 2026.
Food insecurity refers to the lack of access to nutritionally adequate foods for a healthy active life. Food insecurity may reflect a household’s need to make trade-offs between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.
Food insecurity affects Kentuckians of all ages, and according to Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap data (based on 2024 information), about 1 in 4 Kentucky children are estimated to experience food insecurity and are among the most vulnerable when they do not have consistent access to nutritious food. Older Kentuckians also face significant challenges, with an estimated 13.1% of Kentucky seniors age 65 and older experiencing food insecurity — in other words, roughly 1 in 8 seniors.
“These numbers remind us that food insecurity affects our neighbors, our families and our children,” said Brad Slone, chair of the Pikeville Community Foundation. “Through this grant opportunity, we want to support the people who are working every day to make sure families and children in Pike County have access to nutritious food. We know our local organizations know our communities and understand the needs. Our role is to help give them the resources they need to reach more people and make a meaningful difference.”
PCF was established in 2019 to create a culture of giving and philanthropy that promotes community development. It serves as a resource to engage the community in cooperative and creative partnerships to strengthen and build a better future. Board members include Kathy Atkins (Secretary/Treasurer), Gerrie Clark, Helena Jackson (Vice-Chair), Nee Jackson, Paul Jones, Rick Newsom, Howard Roberts, and Brad Slone (Chair).
