Floyd County Community Foundation Awards Bertee & Rhetta Faye Adkins Scholarship to Betsy Layne High School Students

Share on:

STANVILLE, KY, May 18 2025 — The Floyd County Community Foundation (FCCF), an affiliate of the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky, awarded the Bertee & Rhetta Faye Adkins Scholarship to six Betsy Layne High School students. The scholarships were presented by FCCF board member, Rhonda Clark, at a special event held at Betsy Layne High School on May 18, 2025.

The Bertee & Rhetta Faye Adkins Scholarship is for graduating seniors at Betsy Layne High School in Floyd County, Kentucky. When Bert T. (Bertee) Adkins started at Pikeville College in 1949, he didn’t have enough money to ride the bus the 12 miles from his Floyd County home to Pikeville, let alone enough for lunch every day. Bertee made the decision to leave Pikeville College and join the Air Force. After a 20-year military career, Bertee went on to obtain his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Eastern Kentucky University. There Bertee enjoyed a long, distinguished teaching career at his alma mater mentoring young students. However, he never forgot his struggle to complete his education. Bertee never wanted another student to have to make the decision between eating lunch or riding the bus when trying to further their education. As a result, Bertee established the Bertee and Rhetta Faye Adkins Scholarship at the Floyd County Community Foundation.

This year’s scholarship recipients include:

  • $1,000 – Hanna Hamilton
  • $1,000 – Kata Newsome
  • $1,000 – Brice Fleenor
  • $1,000 – Brooklyn Rogers
  • $1,000 – Ethan Roberts
  • $1,000 – Cameron Pente

The Floyd County Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky – a nationally accredited community foundation serving the Appalachian Kentucky region.
