The Ultimate Guide to Installing the Facebook Pixel for Small Businesses

When you think about marketing for your small business, undoubtedly Facebook ads come to mind. Facebook ads can be a tremendous advertising avenue for your business, but you’ll want to make sure you’re optimizing your ads for success, and that means you’ll need to install the Facebook Pixel before you run your first ad.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about the Facebook Pixel, from installation to optimization, so you can start running targeted ads and growing your business.

What is the Facebook Pixel and Why is it Important?

The Facebook Pixel works by placing a small piece of code on your website that tracks the actions users take on your site after clicking on your Facebook ads. It allows you to:

  • Measure the effectiveness of your ads
  • Optimize them for better performance
  • Create targeted audiences for future ads
  • Retarget people who have already engaged with your website.

Here’s a more detailed explanation using an example:

Let’s say you own an online clothing store and you’re running a Facebook ad campaign to promote your new line of summer dresses. You’ve installed the Facebook Pixel on your website. Here’s how the Pixel can help your business:

Track Conversions: When someone clicks on your Facebook ad and makes a purchase on your website, the Pixel tracks this as a conversion. This helps you see which ads are driving the most sales, allowing you to optimize your ad spend for better ROI.

Optimize Ads: The Pixel tracks the actions users take on your website, such as browsing products or adding items to their cart. With this data, you can create custom audiences based on specific actions, such as people who have viewed a product but didn’t purchase. You can then use this audience to retarget them with ads showcasing the product they were interested in, potentially leading to a conversion.

Create Lookalike Audiences: The Pixel also allows you to create lookalike audiences based on the behavior of people who have already engaged with your website. This means you can reach new potential customers who are similar to your existing customers, increasing the chances of conversion.

Measure Ad Performance: The Pixel provides valuable insights into how your ads are performing, including metrics like click-through rate, cost per click, and conversion rate. This information helps you make data-driven decisions to improve your ad campaigns and achieve better results.

How to Install the Facebook Pixel

Step 1:  Create Your Pixel

  1. Go to your Facebook Ads Manager and click on the menu button (≡) in the top left corner.
  2. Select “Pixels” under the “Measure & Report” column.
  3. Click “Create a Pixel” and follow the setup instructions.

Step 2: Install the Pixel on Your Website

  • For WordPress Websites:
    • Install and activate the “Insert Headers and Footers” plugin.
    • Go to Settings > Insert Headers and Footers. Paste your Facebook Pixel code into the “Scripts in Footer” section and click “Save.”
    • Verify Installation: Go back to your Facebook Pixel dashboard and click “Continue” to finish the setup. Click on “Test Events” to ensure your Pixel is working correctly.
  • For Squarespace Websites:
    • Go to your Squarespace dashboard and click on “Settings.” Select “Advanced” > “Code Injection.” Paste your Facebook Pixel code into the “Header” section and click “Save.”
    • Verify Installation: Go back to your Facebook Pixel dashboard and click “Continue” to finish the setup. Click on “Test Events” to ensure your Pixel is working correctly.
  • For GoDaddy Websites:
    • Log in to your GoDaddy account and open your website editor.
    • Find the “Settings” or “Advanced Settings” section. Paste your Facebook Pixel code into the “Header Code” or “Footer Code” section and save changes.
    • Verify Installation: Go back to your Facebook Pixel dashboard and click “Continue” to finish the setup. Click on “Test Events” to ensure your Pixel is working correctly.
  • For Shopify Websites:
    • Go to your Shopify dashboard and click on “Online Store” > “Preferences.” Paste your Facebook Pixel code into the “Facebook Pixel” section and click “Save.”
    • Verify Installation: Go back to your Facebook Pixel dashboard and click “Continue” to finish the setup. Click on “Test Events” to ensure your Pixel is working correctly.

Now that you’ve installed your Facebook Pixel, let the pixel collect some information over the next week/month before you begin running ads using your pixel data.
