Community Support for Generations

Share on:

What is your vision for your community?

The Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky consistently asks this question to donors, boards, affiliates and program directors. It’s a part of the overall concept of rising where we’re rooted. And, we’re proud to say that the answers are often turned into action through countless programs and local community foundation work.

But how can you continue the work of ensuring vibrant and livable communities for generations to come?

Estate Planning: Supporting a Thriving Community for Generations

Margaret and Danny Maggard wanted to figure this out together, having spent their lives as a part of a thriving Kentucky community in Hazard.

“I have been blessed to have grown up, worked, and raised my family in a community where people’s relationships with one another were, and are, the most important resource that we have,” said Danny. “We have experienced many problems in my lifetime. Some we have solved, some we still have, and new ones arise everyday. It’s an old cliche, but still rings true: ‘When we work together, we can overcome anything’.”

The pair came to the Foundation to figure out how to continue this legacy and support Hazard through their giving. They created a community foundation tailored to their philanthropic goals that would help to ensure the future of the place they loved.

“When we thought about starting a community foundation around twelve years ago, I had no idea how a community foundation worked, nor how it could be beneficial for our area. But, I did understand about ‘community’ and its importance in my life.”

–Danny Maggard

Uniting the efforts of a community to continually build a better place is the purpose of the Maggards’ community foundation. They have seen the value of growing a region by relying on coordinated action beyond their sole perspectives. The couple agreed to make provisions in their wills to continue this work even after they’re gone.

“It gives us comfort and hope, knowing that the next generations will have opportunities which, hopefully, will help them in their endeavors to make our region a better place.”
